As the North Olympic Peninsula and the rest of the U.S. prepare for Independence Day on Saturday, our neighbors to the north get a jump on celebrating today.
It’s Canada Day, a national holiday celebrating the anniversary of the July 1, 1867, enactment of the British North America Act, which today is called the Constitution Act. It united three British colonies into a single country called Canada within the British Empire.
And Victoria, the capital of British Columbia, is showing the red and white with loads of activities within steps of the terminal where the MV Coho ferry from Port Angeles lands (see box at right).
Here are some of the highlights at Inner Harbour, along the quay and on the expansive and beautiful lawns of the Parliament Buildings and the Fairmont Empress Hotel.

Victoria Celebrates Canada Day is excited to announce a great line-up of family-friendly events, main stage performances, the return of A Flavour of Canada, and our annual Fireworks display over the Inner Harbour, all set to take place on July 1, 2015!
Once again we’re committed to our ongoing green initiative, so expect to see the Canada Day Team Green out in full force keeping our beautiful Inner Harbour clean.
Highlights for this year’s celebrations include…
Victoria Celebrates Canada Day’s headliner, the energetic, multicultural and always-entertaining Delhi 2 Dublin!
As part of our annual partnership with the BC Government Francophone Affairs Program, Quebecois electronic pop band Monogrenade joins this year’s lineup on the Canada Day main stage. French programming is made possible thanks to the support of the Canada-British Columbia Official Languages Agreement on French-Language Services.
Other performances feature a strong mix of local and multicultural acts. These include Vancouver’s soul, funk boys The Boom Booms, presented in partnership with Victoria’s Ska and Reggae Festival; Vancouver-based “Fairy-Folk” musician, Jordan Klassen; Juno award-winning children’s performer, Helen Austin; Victoria-native Mike Edel; island favourites, Carmanah; The Taiko Drummers, and more!
The Victoria Celebrates Canada Day fireworks are set to take place at 10:20 p.m. Tune in to our media partners at The Zone @ 91.3 or 100.3 The Q! for a live feed with accompanying music — but we’re getting ahead of ourselves…
A Flavour of Canada will be up at the intersection of Belleville and Government streets again, because we liked it closer to the legislature lawns!
And not to worry, the Coast Capital Living Flag will be back on the B.C. Legislature Lawns early in the afternoon. We’ll have 1,500 red and white shirts to hand out, so make sure to come early, or feel free to bring your own!
