PORT ANGELES — A March trial has been set for Ordez Eugene Kompkoff, the Port Angeles man who surrendered to law enforcement after a five-hour standoff near Joyce on Jan. 26.

Kompkoff, 21, pleaded not guilty Friday to charges of first-degree kidnapping, second-degree assault with a deadly weapon, first-degree unlawful possession of a firearm, first-degree escape, heroin possession and two counts of harassment-threats to kill.

His trial was set for March 28.

Defense attorney Karen Unger asked the court to appoint Dr. Ken Muscatel to conduct a psychiatric evaluation of Kompkoff.

“We may have a diminished-capacity defense,” Unger said.

Clallam County Superior Court Judge Christopher Melly appointed the Seattle psychiatrist, setting a maximum fee of $3,000.

The Clallam County Sheriff’s Office said Kompkoff was extremely intoxicated and may have taken a number of pills before surrendering at the Salt Creek RV Park east of Joyce.

Investigators allege that Kompkoff held a male acquaintance hostage at gunpoint inside a residence and threatened to shoot law enforcement officers, according to the affidavit for probable cause.

Portion of 112 closed

A portion of state Highway 112 was closed during the standoff, which began at about 11:30 a.m. and ended at about 4:25 p.m. Jan. 26.

Deputies found a loaded .357 revolver and a .380 semi-automatic pistol inside the residence.

They also found drug paraphernalia and what appeared to be heroin residue on Kompkoff, Sheriff’s Sgt. Brian King has said.

Kompkoff was prohibited from possessing firearms because he was serving an 18-month sentence for his role in two Port Angeles incidents involving firearms.

The sentence stemmed from a reported drive-by shooting on Orcas Avenue last March 18 and a home invasion on East Ninth Street on March 21.

A warrant was issued for Kompkoff’s arrest Nov. 8 after he failed to report for a work release program in Kitsap County, according to the state Department of Corrections.

Kompkoff is being held in the Clallam County jail without bond.

Nearly 150 people provided feedback about a new Hurricane Ridge Lodge project following the 2023 fire that destroyed the original structure. Nine easels were set up with questions and notes were provided for people to express their goals for a new lodge.
