Stamp show helps fete Sequim High School’s centennial

SEQUIM — The Strait Stamp Society’s annual stamp show and exhibit this year will commemorate Sequim High’s centennial.

A specially designed envelope stamp and postmark will be available the day of the show Saturday.

The show will be from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Sequim Masonic Lodge, 700 S. Fifth St. It is free and open to the public.

Anyone can get their stamps appraised.

“So bring your box of old stamps down,” said Sequim insurance agent Phil Castell, a society member.

The show also will feature 13 exhibits and seven dealers, including Castell.

“They will be offering for sale all types of material related to stamps, envelopes and related items,” he said.

A snack bar will be available. Special free gifts for children and a door prize from drawings will be offered throughout the day.

The U.S. Postal Service will have a booth where stamps will be sold, along with special show postmark cancellations.

Cathie Osborne, who co-founded the Strait Stamp Society in 1973, still leads the oldest stamp club on the North Olympic Peninsula.

The annual stamp show started 16 years ago when a group of stamp collectors from Victoria encouraged Osborne and other area stamp collectors to put on a show on this side of the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

Many Victorians take the MV Coho over to Port Angeles, and Osborne picks them up for the Sequim show.

The Strait club in return attends the show in Victoria — a kind of a foreign exchange program.

Free stamp magazines and periodicals also will be available.

Collectors from Forks, Port Townsend, Quilcene, Sequim and around the region participate in the show.

The Strait Stamp Society meets the first Thursday of every month at 6 p.m. at the Sequim Library and is open to all members.
