SPORTS: Sequim boys earn berth in state soccer tournament

SILVERDALE — The Sequim boys soccer team earned its second trip to the Class 2A state tournament in school history after recording its seventh straight shutout, topping Washington 1-0 in West Central District playoff action on Saturday at Silverdale Stadium.

It was the ninth shutout of the season for the Wolves, just one short of the school record set the first time they made state in 2004.

“Everybody is super-excited,” Sequim (13-3-1 overall) coach Dave Brasher said. “We’ve kept getting better all year and are playing our best we have all season.

“It’s getting to a point where the team is feeling pretty comfortable that if we can get the one goal [on offense] we are going to win.”

The Wolves picked up that goal just before halftime on Saturday when David LaBeaume volleyed in a corner kick from Evan Watkins in the 34th minute.

Sequim kept up the defensive pressure all match, allowing the Washington offense just four shots on goal.

The Wolves defenders and goalkeeper were profiled in Thursday’s edition of the Peninsula Daily News.

“Actually, they were saying they were nervous and they had to back up what they were doing,” Brasher said of his back line.

Brasher’s squad will face the Northwest District No. 3, which Brasher believes to be Bellingham, on Tuesday at either North Kitsap High School or back at Silverdale Stadium. A win there would be Sequim’s first-ever in state competition.

The Wolves’ win marked the third elimination-game victory over Washington by a Sequim team this school year.

The football team knocked the Patriots out this past fall and Sequim’s baseball team ended Washington’s season at districts on Tuesday.

MOUNT VERNON — What had been deemed a “rebuilding season” for the Redskins (11-7) by many due to heavy losses to last season’s state quarterfinal team ended one game short of state on Saturday.

“We really shot ourselves in the foot playing very disorganized on both offense and defense in the first half,” Port Townsend coach Patrick Kane said.

The lone goal came on a 30-yard hard strike from the left side of the goal box in the 36th minute.

Alex Lockwood had a similar shot miss just wide 30 seconds before halftime for Port Townsend.

“That was probably our best scoring chance,” Kane said.

“We didn’t get too many opportunities,” Kane said. “They really just played a better game than us.

“As I told the team, the expectation was a lot of rebuilding this year, and I was proud of the way they stepped up and played and especially by the leadership shown by seniors Alex [Lockwood], Jessie [Yourish] and Luis [Quintana].”
