Rescued birds, flute music to be offered Saturday in Gardiner in honor of Earth Day

GARDINER — Wild Birds Unlimited will celebrate Earth Day with rescued wild birds and native flute music from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

The business at 275953 U.S. Highway 101 will offer a flute music concert, rehabilitated birds of prey and rescued songbirds and a variety of booths during the 10th annual festival.

The nonprofit wild animal rescues the Northwest Raptor & Wildlife Center of Sequim and Discovery Bay Bird Rescue of Port Townsend will be represented.

Jaye and Gary Moore of the raptor center will present rescued birds.

Students of Northwest native flute player Vince Redhouse, who are in his WindPeople Music of Allyn, will perform at 11:30 a.m.

Other groups also will have booths in the garden at the business.

They include Eagle Creek Nursery selling native plants, the Dungeness River Audubon Center, Trinity River Marine selling recycled Tereto wood Pick Nick Tables, Pacific Northwest Wood Artisans, Peninsula Friends of Animals and area artists Pat Taynton, Amy Weber, Paul Cousineau of Nature’s Art Walk, Ron Smith of Recycled Ranch Relics and Melinda Bryden of Red Fern Designs.

Other booths will provide information on the Wild Olympics Campaign, Western Wildlife Outreach with its bear education trailer, Bay Watch of Discovery Bay, the Murrelet Survival project, Power Trip Solar and Wolf Haven International.

Visitors are invited to bring lawn chairs or blankets for the day.

Donations will be accepted for the animal rescue centers.

They seek such things as aquariums, dog and cat food, small animal-watering bottles, baby bottles to feed the baby deer, powdered goat milk, alfalfa, chain-link fencing, paper towels, Kleenex, potty pads (human or puppy), laundry baskets, heating pads, small dishes like crocks or ashtrays, Exact Baby Bird food, mealworms, towels, new or gently used wool blankets, vet wrap, clothes pins, bleach, Dawn dish soap, hair dryers, play pens and an enclosed trailer for the release of wildlife as well as financial donations.

About 150 to 200 people jumped into 49-degree water at Hollywood Beach on Jan. 1, 2025, for the 37th annual Polar Bear Dip. The air temperature was about 39 degrees, so it was a short, brisk dip that they did three times. There was a beach fire to warm the dippers afterward as well as two portable saunas in the parking lot. The event was sponsored by Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County under the leadership of organizer Dan Welden. Hot drinks, tasty muffins and a certificate for participants were available.
