Prominent judges, lawyers to speak at education conference in Sequim

Peninsula Pro-Bono Lawyers plan largest fundraising event of the year

SEQUIM — The Clallam-Jefferson County Pro Bono Lawyers will host the group’s largest legal education and annual fundraising event Friday at the Holiday Inn Express in Sequim, 1441 E Washington St.

The legal forum, the CLE Bonanza, will be led by well-known judges and lawyers from Western Washington, according to a press release. Leading the lineup are:

• Martin Appelwick, chief judge of the Washington State Court of Appeals, Division I

• Jeanne Marie Clavere, head of the Washington State Bar Association ethics hotline, a call-in service for lawyers with ethics questions

• Retired Judge Ken Williams, formerly of the Clallam County Superior Court bench on ethics problems

• Kevin Scudder, a Seattle lawyer focused on collaborative law and peacemaking in the courtroom

• Liza Burke, a Seattle defense lawyer with tips on the use of protection orders

The event, which starts at 9 a.m. and ends at 4 p.m., aims to bring together lawyers from the North Olympic Peninsula communities to discuss current legal strategies and provide best-practices information to help attorneys provide quality service.

Lawyers providing pro bono service do so without pay to help low- and no-income people with problems related to consumer issues such as simple wills, health care directives, family law and a variety of legal problems.

Many clients are victims of family violence, unlawful evictions or foreclosures, scams inflicted by fraud or in need of access to health care, the press release stated. In 2018, Clallam-Jefferson County Pro Bono Lawyers assisted more than 850 individuals and families.

All proceeds from the event are used to assist low-income and indigent residents in Clallam and Jefferson counties with civil legal needs.

Clallam-Jefferson County Pro Bono Lawyers is a United Way agency that relies on grant support and a base of volunteer lawyers. People who want to contribute to the 501 (c)(3) nonprofit program can do so at CJCPBL, P.O. Box 901, Port Angeles, WA 98362.
