PORT ANGELES — A man who was shot in his home last week has been released from intensive care and is improving at a Seattle hospital.

James J. “Jay” Barnett, 55, of Port Angeles was listed in satisfactory condition at Harborview Medical Center, a hospital spokeswoman said Monday.

Barnett was flown to the hospital March 16 after he was shot inside his home on South Chase Street.

No arrest has been made in the shooting, and the investigation continued Monday, said Deputy Police Chief Brian Smith.

Port Angeles police have said Barnett’s brother-in-law Michael E. Johnson, 57, of Port Angeles shot Barnett several times with a .45-caliber handgun after Barnett kicked open the door to Johnson’s room.

Both individuals lived in the house and had injuries consistent with a physical confrontation, police said.

Johnson was treated at Olympic Medical Center and discharged.

Barnett’s wife, Karen Barnett, and a 6-year-old granddaughter were also in the house at the time of the shooting and were unhurt.

Officers found the woman and child outside the house after the shooting, established a perimeter and began calling to the two men.

They eventually talked Johnson into leaving the house. They went inside and found Barnett in a bedroom.
