NEWS BRIEFS — One-day Zen retreat set Saturday . . . and other items

PORT ANGELES — North Olympic Sangha, a Zen community, will hold a Zazenkai (a one-day Zen retreat) from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Alternated zazen (seated meditation), kinhin (walking meditation) and private, individual instruction with the Zen master are available.

Silent coffee/tea breaks and a vegetarian soup and bread lunch will be offered.

At 10 a.m., there will be a chanting service.

At 1 p.m., Kristen Larson, a master of the Diamond Sangha, will present a talk about case No. 47 in the koan collection: Gateless Barrier, “Tosotu’s Three Barriers,” which focuses on the most basic of questions “Who am I?,” “Why was I born?” and “What is death?”

Author to speak

PORT ANGELES — Eric Barger, author and radio host in the field of Christian apologetics, will speak twice at First Church of God, 505 S. Race St., at 11 a.m. Sunday.

The first presentation will be “Ten Reasons Why Jesus is Returning Soon.”

A potluck will follow this session.

Barger will speak again at 6 p.m. with “Understanding Postmoderns.”

‘Birthing into Love’

PORT ANGELES — The Rev. Pat Mawson will speak at Unity in the Olympics, 2917 E. Myrtle St., at the 10:30 a.m. worship service Sunday.

The lesson will be “Birthing into Love.”

A potluck dinner follows the service.

Free child care is available.

A time for meditation will be held from 10 a.m. to 10:15 a.m.

On Saturday, May 17, participants will feed the youths at The Answer for Youth. Food should be brought to Unity by 3:40 p.m.

Zambia talk

PORT TOWNSEND — First Presbyterian Church, 1111 Franklin St., will host the Rev. Dustin “Dusty” Ellington for a talk at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Ellington will speak about his work at Justo Mwale Theological University College in Lusaka, Zambia.

He teaches New Testament, Greek and preaching at the institution, training future pastors for service in Zambia, Malawi, Zimbabwe and more.
