PORT ANGELES — Clallam Conservation District is offering a free workshop for forest landowners.

The workshop will be held from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. today at a forest setting on Old Mill Road.

Signs directing attendees will begin at the corner of East Ahlvers and South Old Mill roads, above the Port Angeles High School.

ISA-certified arborist and owner of Sitkum Tree Service Conor Haggerty will lead participants on a hike through the forest and discuss tips for evaluating tree health, assessing danger trees, selective pruning for view enhancement and restorative timber stand management using the “worst first” thinning approach.

The hike will include a walk through a riparian area and discussion on choosing native plants for riparian areas and vegetating unstable slopes.

The workshop is free, but space is limited. Pre-registration is required.

Phone the district at 360-775-3747, ext. 1, to register.

Principal selected

PORT ANGELES — A principal in Port Angeles for six years and a teacher for 14 years, Amity Butler has been selected for the America Achieves’ Fellowship for Teachers and Principals for the 2014-16 school years.

The program is highly selective, with less than 20 percent of nominees selected.

By providing a platform for sharing best practices and giving educators a voice in local, state and national discussions about public education, the impact of the program extends beyond the individual fellows and into the communities they serve.

Butler joins 180 fellows from 35 states and the District of Columbia to develop skills to aid students.

To launch this work, Butler will travel to New York City this weekend to meet with other fellows and dive deep into critical issues, collaborate on ways to scale their impact, develop action plans and advise policy makers and thought leaders.

Butler is also a National Board Certified Teacher. She was hired as the principal of Franklin Elementary in 2009.
