NEWS BRIEFS: ‘Health from A to Z’ presentations scheduled at Port Hadlock library starting Monday . . . and other items

PORT HADLOCK — Free “Health from A to Z” presentations will take place at the Jefferson County Library, 620 Cedar Ave., from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. twice a month.

These talks feature presentations by Jefferson Healthcare medical professionals.

The discussions provide an in-depth look at individual health concerns such as heart conditions and diagnoses, joint pain and managing arthritis, cancer prevention and falls prevention.

Each lecture is followed by a question-and-answer time with the presenter.

Upcoming talks are as follows:

■ This Monday: “Everything You Wanted to Know About Cholesterol” with Judy King, RN BSN, cardiac rehabilitation

■ Monday, June 15: “Skipped Heartbeats — Should I Worry?” with Judy Tordini, RN, cardiology services director

■ Monday, July 6: “Understanding My New Heart Diagnosis” with Judy Tordini, RN, cardiology services director

■ Monday, July 20: “Weight Management: A Balanced Approach to Eating” with Irene Marble, dietitian.

No flight practice set this week

COUPEVILLE — There will be no field carrier landing practice operations for aircraft stationed at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island at the outlying field in Coupeville today through Saturday.

The schedule is subject to change to meet mission requirements.

Senior nutrition

PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles Senior Nutrition Site dinners will be served at 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday at the Port Angeles Senior & Community Center, 328 E. Seventh St.

A suggested donation is $5 for those who are 60 or older.

People younger than 60 can attend for $8.

Reservations should be made 24 hours in advance to 360-457-8921.

Menus are subject to change.

■ Tuesday: Waldorf salad, chicken cordon bleu, rice pilaf, lima beans and peach crisp.

■ Wednesday: Green salad, spaghetti with meat sauce, cauliflower, garlic bread and fresh melon.

■ Thursday: Potato salad, barbecued chicken, corn on the cob, Brussels sprouts and apple crisp.

■ Friday: Marinated veggies, baked fish, baked potato, glazed carrots and sherbet.

Mac users group

SEQUIM — The Strait Mac Users Group will meet at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 525 N. Fifth Ave., at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Ray Bentsen will give an “Introduction to Apple Watch.”

He will present a slideshow demo featuring aspects of how Apple Watch can be used with an iPhone 5 or 6 on a daily basis.

Space exploration

NASA Solar System Ambassador Ron Hobbs will give a review of historic space exploration techniques and breakthroughs followed by new and groundbreaking tools and discoveries at local North Olympic Library System libraries.

“The Adventures of Robots, Rovers and Astronauts in the Third Age of Exploration” is the focus of this lecture and is a free 2015 Adult Summer Reading Program event.

The first session is at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave., from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday.

The second is at the Forks Library, 171 S. Forks Ave., from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday.

The third is at the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St., from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday.

Crescent potluck

JOYCE — Crescent Grange No. 1123 will hold its monthly community potluck at the grange, 50870 state Highway 112, at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

After the potluck, the program for the evening will feature Rich James, who will update the community on the progress of the Olympic Discovery Trail.

The presentation will incorporate questions and answers regarding routing and right of way between Freshwater Bay Road and Camp Hayden, plus portions of Lake Crescent and progress up Fairholm Hill west of Lake Crescent.

The silent auction for the evening will benefit the Crescent Co-op Preschool.

‘Future of Fish’

PORT ANGELES — “The Future of Fish on the North Olympic Peninsula” will take place at The Landing mall, 115 E. Railroad Ave., at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

A panel will provide a local lens on the global seafood system by bringing together multiple stakeholders from the North Olympic Peninsula who are playing different roles in harvesting or providing the seafood that ends up on people’s plates, according to a news release.

Featured panelists include Robert Elofson, Lower Elwha Klallam tribe; Neil Conklin, Bella Italia restaurant; Graham Young, University of Washington Aquatic & Fisheries Sciences; and Alan Cook, Icicle Seafoods.

The panel will be moderated by Pete Granger, seafood industry specialist at WA Sea Grant.

Poets reading

PORT TOWNSEND — The Northwind Arts Center, 701 Water St., will present Lyn Coffin and Jed Myers in the Northwind Reading Series at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Admission is a suggested donation of $3 to $5.

All proceeds support the center.

Coffin is a published poet, fiction writer, playwright and translator, with 19 books to her credit including A Taste of Cascadia.

Myers began to seek publication of his poems after 9/11.

Two of his collections, The Nameless and Watching the Perseids, are 2014 publications.

Mutsu City visit

PORT ANGELES — Two Port Angeles High School students, Matt Groves and Alyssa Wetzler, recently visited Mutsu City, Japan, as part of a delegation traveling there for the 20th anniversary of the sister cities’ — Port Angeles and Mutsu City — exchange program.

As part of their week, Groves and Wetzler spent one day in classes with their hosts and the class of Mutsu City students who visited Port Angeles last October.

The remaining days were spent with their host families.

The Port Angeles adults in the delegation were Cindy Sofie, Port Angeles Mayor Dan Di Guilio, Tad Price (Peninsula International Relations Association president), Carol Di Guilio, Lucy Edwards (Dry Creek Elementary teacher), Barbara Bentley (PIRA board member), Donna Moreau, Joel Hecht, Port Angeles City Councilwoman Cherie Kidd and Amy Mattie.

They visited a junior high school, Tanabu Senior High School, the fire department and the new Emergency Dispatch Center, the library, sports dome and new park, among other sites.

Free days added for national parks

Non-U.S. residents to pay more for visiting

About 150 to 200 people jumped into 49-degree water at Hollywood Beach on Jan. 1, 2025, for the 37th annual Polar Bear Dip. The air temperature was about 39 degrees, so it was a short, brisk dip that they did three times. There was a beach fire to warm the dippers afterward as well as two portable saunas in the parking lot. The event was sponsored by Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County under the leadership of organizer Dan Welden. Hot drinks, tasty muffins and a certificate for participants were available.
