NEWS BRIEFS: Coast Guard cutter back at Port Angeles station … and other items

PORT ANGELES — The crew aboard the U.S. Coast Guard cutter Active has returned to its Port Angeles homeport following a counter-drug patrol in international waters.

During back-to-back interdictions May 18 and 19 off the coast of Central America in the eastern Pacific Ocean, the cutter’s 75-member crew apprehended 11 suspects and an estimated $95 million worth of illicit narcotics, according to a press release.

The drugs were turned over to federal agents from the Drug Enforcement Administration for destruction.

The cutter’s crew returned to Port Angeles on Friday.

“I’m incredibly proud of this crew and their accomplishments,” said Active’s commanding officer, Cmdr. Chris German, in a press release.

In addition to conducting law enforcement missions, Active’s crew conducted deck landing qualifications with local Coast Guard air stations to provide training for the pilots and Active’s crew, giving members the opportunity to increase their helicopter operational proficiency for future missions.
