NEWS BRIEFS — Center Road paving to disrupt traffic in Port Townsend starting May 7 . . . and other items

PORT TOWNSEND — Traffic will be disrupted on 2 and a half miles of Center Road from Wednesday, May 7 to Friday, May 30.

The road will be restored and resurfaced from milepost 4.3 north of the road’s intersection with Larson Lake Road to Milepost 6.8 near the state Highway 104 intersection in a $628,009 project.

Short delays are expected between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. as stretches up to a mile long are narrowed to a single lane.

Flaggers and a pilot car will route one-way traffic through the work zone.

Residents adjacent to Center Road can expect restricted access to their driveways. Crews with the contractor, Lakeside Industries of Port Angeles, will assist residents across the work zone when necessary. Emergency vehicle access will not be restricted.

The Center Road project includes pavement milling, asphalt overlay, restoring lane markings and installing traffic signs and reflective guide posts.

The Center Road project is funded by the Federal Highway Administration and the local Public Infrastructure Fund, the Jefferson County Department of Public Works said.

Port Angeles church to host Earth Day event

PORT ANGELES — St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 510 E. Park Ave., will host an Earth Day celebration today beginning with a special worship service at 11 a.m.

After the service, choir director Jim Couture will present a special musical creation concert titled “Songs of Wisdom II.”

A mostly “local lunch” will follow in the fellowship hall.

Liam Antrim, a resource protection specialist for NOAA’s Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary, will speak during the worship service and answer questions during the luncheon.

The public is invited to any or all parts.

BMX track to open

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles BMX Track opens for practice Thursday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Races start Sunday.

Track access is free to spectators. Riders should visit the website, www.pabmxtrack.com, for costs.

To get to the track, head west on U.S. Highway 101 through Port Angeles and turn left onto state Highway 117. Follow 1.5 miles to Lauridsen Boulevard, then turn right and go 2 miles, and the track will be on the right.

Weed control focus of tips for gardening

PORT ANGELES — Clallam County noxious weed control coordinator Cathy Lucero will discuss weed management in home gardens in the county commissioners’ meeting room at the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St.

Her free talk begins at noon Thursday.

Lucero will explain why weeds are successful and how weed plant life cycles influence which control methods to use and how to decide when to use them.

She will discuss prevention and early intervention management strategies.

Gardeners who attend are welcome to bring samples of the weeds they have questions about.

This presentation is part of the “Green Thumbs Garden Tips” brown bag series sponsored by the WSU Clallam County Master Gardeners on the second and fourth Thursday of every month in Port Angeles.

Attendees may bring a lunch.

Master Gardeners also provide a free plant clinic in the lobby of the courthouse from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursdays. Gardeners can bring plant samples in for diagnosis and management of plant problems.

Chapter officers

PORT ANGELES — Esther Chapter No. 19 Order of the Eastern Star will hold its installation of officers at the Masonic Center, 622 S. Lincoln St., at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

Worthy matron-elect Virginia Elliot and worthy patron-elect Kevin Elliot invite the public to this free event.

Railroad trail walk

PORT ANGELES — The Olympic Peninsula Explorers will walk the Spruce Railroad Trail at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Entrants can sign up at the Fairmount Restaurant, 1127 U.S. Highway 101.

This is a 3.7-or 7.5-mile walk.

The trail offers a gentle stroll along Lake Crescent’s north shore.

There are restrooms at the trailhead. No pets are permitted on the walk.
