NEWS BRIEFS: Celebration at school set tonight in PT … and other items

PORT TOWNSEND — The newly opened Salish Coast Elementary School will host a Community Celebration from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. today.

The school at 1637 Grant St., Port Townsend, will offer tours and a short program.

Music will be played by Billy B, whose performance will focus on the environment and encourages participation.

A school bus shuttle will be available for those who wish to park at the Haines Street Park and Ride from 4:40 p.m. to 7:10 p.m.

A formal dedication will take place at a later date when the final elements of the building construction are completed, school officials said.

At 8:30 a.m. today, students will participate in a formal flag dedication ceremony with the American Legion and the Scouts, as the new flag pole is now ready for daily use.

Fort Worden panel

PORT TOWNSEND — The Fort Worden Advisory Committee is seeking applicants for at-large positions.

The deadline to apply is Nov. 6. Candidates will be interviewed at a Nov. 15 meeting.

Committee membership is a three-year term.

The committee was created by the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission in 1973 to provide assistance and recommendations for the development and operation of Fort Worden State Park. Specifically, the committee provides a venue for public input and advice to executive leadership on matters relating to the operation and management of Fort Worden State Park.

Dementia talk

SEQUIM — “Crossing the Bridges of Dementia,” a free, two-part workshop about dealing with dementia, is set for this fall at Discovery Memory Care.

The workshop at 408 W. Washington St., is free and open to everyone, particularly those who are caring for a person with a dementia or Alzheimer’s diagnosis and seeking information and tools.

The first session, titles “Dementia — What is it?” is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday. The second, “Communicating with People with Dementia” is set for 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3.

PA Parent-teacher conferences

PORT ANGELES —Port Angeles School District will conduct Parent-Teacher conferences Oct. 31 through Nov. 2.

There is no school Oct 31.

There will be half days Nov. 1-2. The half day schedule by school is available online at www.portangelesschools.org.

Parents selected conference times during back-to-school night.

Therapeutic Court

PORT TOWNSEND — The public is invited to a Therapeutic Court graduation at 10 a.m. Oct. 30.

The ceremony will take place in the district courtroom at the Jefferson County Courthouse, 1820 Jefferson St.

The graduates have been enrolled in the program for two or more years.

Whittington honored in journal list

PORT TOWNSEND – Hilary Whittington, chief administrative officer and chief financial officer at Jefferson Healthcare, was honored by Puget Sound Business Journal as one of the 2018 “40 Under 40” at a ceremony Sept. 28.

The annual designation recognizes the 40 most up and coming leaders around the Puget Sound.

Whittington oversees the finance, ancillary and support service related departments at Jefferson Healthcare.

Whittington joined Jefferson Healthcare in 2011 as Chief Financial Officer and was promoted to Chief Administrative Officer in 2018.

“Hilary has been instrumental in both our growth and improvement as an organization. She understands the critical role Jefferson Healthcare plays in our community and is a passionate advocate for the continued sustainability of rural health care,” said Mike Glenn, CEO at Jefferson Healthcare.

Unity speaker slated for PA this weekend

PORT ANGELES — The Rev. Donna Little will speak at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at Unity in the Olympics, 2917 E. Myrtle Ave.

Little’s topic is “Are you a light bringer?”

Sunday service begins at 10 a.m.

Writers Conference

SEQUIM — The Olympic Peninsula Christian Writers’ Conference will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 3 in Sequim.

The conference, to be held at Dungeness ​Community Church, 45 Eberle Lane, will offer a full day of advice on writing craft, the business of writing, publishing options and the life of a writer.

Keynote speaker Diana Savage will share “Three Guidelines for Success after Missing the Boat.”

Award-winning authors Kate Breslin and Dennis Brooke will be among 15 presenters at the conference.

Breslin of Bremerton will see her fourth book in print in early 2019.
