LIVE MUSIC COLUMN: Fight Friday 13th fear with fierce tunes

THE FEAR OF Friday the 13th is known as paraskevidekatriaphobia, but for many, Friday will be a night of fun and music, especially because the 2nd Friday Art Rock makes its way into Port Angeles once again.

Other weekend live music events around the Peninsula offer fearless entertainment opportunities, too.

Port Angeles

■ Today at Castaways Restaurant and Night Club, 1213 Marine Drive, it’s Jerry’s country jam with guest performer Chuck Grall from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

■ Today at Bar N9NE, 229 W. First St., the open mic starts at 9 p.m.

On Friday, Joy in Mudville plays rock music to accompany artists Lynne Roberson and Jeff Tocher in their “Two Artists, One Canvas” presentation for 2nd Friday Art Rock (2FAR) at 8 p.m. $3 cover.

On Saturday, DJ RoBoTiX spins top hits for a Port Scandalous Roller Derby Jell-O shot fundraiser from 9 p.m. into the night.

■ On Friday at the Vern Burton Community Center, 308 E. Fourth St., Steve and Anne Johnson’s “Just For Fun Dance Class” sponsors an all-ages community dance with live music by the Jimmy Hoffman Band from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. $5 admission; free for students.

■ On Friday at The Metta Room, 132 E. Front St., DJ Bizzle plays a variety of danceable music starting at 9 p.m.

On Saturday, Jessica Lynne and the Cousins play rockin’ country at 9 p.m. For those 21 and older. $5 cover.

■ On Friday at the Fairmount Restaurant, 1127 W. U.S. Highway 101, there’s a jam session from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., followed by Jim Lind and Luck of the Draw with special guest Chuck Grall until 8 p.m.

On Sundays, Craig Logue hosts the open mic from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

■ On Saturday at the Lazy Moon Craft Tavern, 130 S. Lincoln St., the Twisted Roots Trio returns with some standards and some surprises starting at 7 p.m.

On Wednesdays, Ches Ferguson & Friends perform classic rock with a few originals thrown in from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

■ On Saturday at Elliott’s Antique Emporium, 135 E. First St., Hawaii Amor plays traditional ukulele music from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

■ On Sunday at Next Door Gastropub, 113 W. First St., Bread & Gravy, the husband-and-wife acoustic duo of Jess and Stephanie Doenges, perform starting at 5 p.m.

■ On Monday at the Coo Coo Nest, 1017 E. First St., join the open mic with Jared Bauer at 9 p.m.

■ On Tuesdays at the Port Angeles Senior Center, 328 E. Seventh St., Wally’s Boys play jazz dance favorites from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. $5 cover; first-timers free.

Sequim

■ Today at Wind Rose Cellars, 143 W. Washington St., Jim Lind & Going Rogue, a blues-flavored band, entertains from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

On Friday, Mary Tulin plays acoustic Celtic music from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

On Saturday, Lush Life Jazz Trio with Trevor Hanson, Joey Lazzaro and Jim Rosand brings originals in jazz from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

■ On Friday, Kevin Lee Magner and Scott Bradley play from a variety of genres and their originals at Stymie’s Bar and Grill at the Cedars at Dungeness, 1965 Woodcock Road, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

■ On Saturday at the Sequim VFW, 169 E. Washington St., High Country plays country tunes for dancing from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

■ On Sunday at the Shipley Center, 921 E. Hammond St., Dottie Lilly and Vienna Barron host an open mic (musical only) from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

■ On Sunday at the Sequim Prairie Grange, 290 Macleay Road, Buck Ellard plays country classics and more for dancing and listening from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Food is provided. $10 per person, $15 per couple or $25 per family.

■ On Wednesday at Nourish, 1345 S. Sequim Ave., Victor Reventlow hosts the open mic from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., with sign-ups at 6 p.m.

Blyn

■ Today in Club Seven lounge at 7 Cedars Casino, 270756 U.S. Highway 101, dance to Haywire’s country originals and covers from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

On Friday, Geoffrey Castle returns to the Olympic Peninsula with his electric violin, his all-star band and the Seattle Irish Dance Company from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

On Saturday, DJ Bizzle plays “wearing o’ the green” music at the St. Patrick’s Day party from 8:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.

On Friday in the Rainforest Bar, listen to the mellow tunes of Jeremy and Anna Pederson from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

On Saturday, Trail Mix plays contemporary folk from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Port Hadlock

■ On Friday at the Ajax Cafe, 21 N. Water St., Trevor Hanson plays classical guitar from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

■ On Sundays at Zoog’s Caveman Cookin’, 141 Chimacum Road, join the all-ages open mic from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Port Ludlow

■ Today in the Fireside Room at the Resort at Port Ludlow, 1 Heron Road, Trevor Hanson plays classical guitar from 5 p.m. to closing.

Port Townsend

■ Today at the Cellar Door, 940 Water St., come check out this week’s local DJ starting at 9 p.m.

On Friday, the Steve Grandinetti Band makes its debut appearance with original blues, rock and funk material plus cover tunes from 9 p.m. until closing. $3 cover.

On Saturday, Full Circle — a sextet made up of Robin Bessier, vocals; Mark Schecter, piano; Brian Douglas, guitar; Rex Rice, trombone; Dirk Anderson, bass; and Tom Svornich, drums — plays a mix of blues, jazz and dance tunes from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. $5 cover.

On Tuesdays, join the weekly jazz night from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. This week, Todd Fisher and friends play the free event.

■ Every Thursday, The Boiler Room, 711 Water St., host an all-ages open mic at 8 p.m., with sign-ups at 7 p.m.

■ On Friday at the Northwest Maritime Center, 431 Water St., it’s the last show for The Better Half, a five-member band that has been playing funk, rock and soul since 2006. The event starts at 6:30 p.m., with BandLab playing first.

■ On Friday at the Uptown Pub & Grill, 1016 Lawrence St., the Crow Quill Night Owls, a local band playing jug, ragtime, blues and hillbilly music, steps on stage at 9 p.m.

On Saturday, Moongrass, a “Nooksack delta” group of six, sings songs about life in an Americana style from 9 p.m. to closing.

On Tuesdays, join in on an open mic with Jarrod Bramson at 9 p.m.

■ On Saturday at the Pourhouse, 2231 Washington St., the Blue Crows perform from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.

■ On Saturday at Sirens, 823 Water St., Dedric Clark and the Social Animals play original rock, blues and roots songs at 9 p.m. $5 cover.

On Tuesdays, there’s a fiddler jam session starting at 7 p.m.

On Wednesdays, join the open mic starting at 9 p.m.

■ Every Monday at Alchemy, 842 Washington St., Trevor Hanson plays guitar from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

■ Every Monday at The Tin Brick, 232 Taylor St., Jack Reid hosts an all-ages open mic, with sign-ups at 6 p.m., the opening act at 6:30 p.m. and the mic at 7 p.m. Poets welcome, too.

Discovery Bay

■ Every Saturday at Snug Harbor Cafe, 281732 U.S. Highway 101, Skeeter Ezell plays covers of Roy Orbison and the like from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

High notes

■ On Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Laurel B. Johnson Community Center, 923 Hazel Point Road, Coyle, Buddy Mondlock stops his western tour here with Mike Lindauer accompanying him on bass and harmonies.

Mondlock’s songs have been recorded by Garth Brooks, Guy Clark, Joan Baez and others.

■ On Friday at the Quimper Grange, 1219 Corona St., Port Townsend, there’s a hip-hop dance with recorded music from 8 p.m. until 10 p.m., followed by a concert with Francois Ballou and the Cloud 9 Trio until closing.

On Saturday, Seattle caller Amy Carroll calls the square dance and social as Roscoe — with Dave Thielk on fiddle, Katya Kirsch on banjo and Chris Cooper on guitar — play old-time dance tunes from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.

Admission is $5 for adults, free for those 16 and younger.

■ On Saturday at the Port Angeles High School Performing Arts Center, 304 E. Park Ave., the Port Angeles Symphony presents conductor candidate Jooyong Ahn and soloist Monique Mead in concert at 7:30 p.m. General seating is $14 for adults, $12 for seniors/students. Phone 360-457-5579 for tickets.

■ On Saturday at Mount Pleasant Grange, 2432 Mount Pleasant Road, Port Angeles, a traditional St. Patrick’s Day corned beef with cabbage dinner is being offered with entertainment by Jim Lind & Going Rogue at 6 p.m. Admission is $15. For more information, phone Sarah Kaser at 360-452-3942.

■ On Sunday in the Sequim High School auditorium, 601 N. Sequim Ave., the Sequim City Band presents its final concert of the 2014-15 indoor season at 3 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
