Highway shut down near Brinnon after car strikes log truck

BRINNON — U.S. Highway 101 near Buckhorn Road in the Brinnon area was shut down in both directions for two hours and had alternating traffic for another two hours early Friday morning after a car struck a log truck.

Logs were strewn along 400 feet of highway, according to Brinnon Fire Chief Tim Manly.

Manly said the car was going up the hill at Mount Walker headed toward Silverdale at about 5:45 a.m., when it came around the corner and the driver lost control.

The car hit the truck in one of its large axles and tore it apart, sending logs along the highway.

“We did a good job of getting it cleaned up and taken care of,” Manly said. “The call went out at 5:45 a.m. and we were done by 9:45 a.m.

”There were logs flying down the road,” he continued. “We had to bring in street sweepers to help clean up.

“It was a heck of a mess, lots of mud and logs and stuff, but only minor injuries.”

Manly said the state Department of Transportation, State Patrol, Brinnon Fire Department and Quilcene Fire Rescue all assisted.

State Patrol spokeswoman Katherine Weatherwax wrote in an email that the agency chose not to release a collision memo on the wreck.
