High winds take down power lines; some 2,300 lose electricity

At least 2,300 North Olympic Peninsula electrical customers lost power today because of high winds.

Jefferson County Public Utility District (PUD) estimated that 1,400 customers had lost power as of 4:30 p.m. and that more were likely tonight.

In Clallam County, about 900 customers had lost power by 7:30 p.m., with 300 getting power restored by 9:45 p.m., according to Michael Howe, Clallam County PUD spokesman.

In East Jefferson County, the areas most affected were been Quilcene, Cape George and Marrowstone Island.

“This storm has persisted longer than anticipated,” the PUD said on its website at http://www.jeffpud.org/ at about 5:30 p.m. “It is very difficult and dangerous to assess damage and restore power while a storm is ongoing.”

Several power lines went down in the Quilcene area near Lake Leland, Wildwood Road and off of Lord’s Lake Loop and its various spur roads.

Some outages were restored by 5:30 p.m. but new outages had been reported west and south of Quilcene by about 7 p.m.

No restoration time for the Quilcene outages was estimated tonight.

Marrowstone Island power was restored by about 8 p.m.

A large outage affecting about 550 customers at Cape George in the afternoon was fixed by 5:30 p.m.

The Jefferson PUD expected most outages to be be repaired by midnight, but with new outages reported, some may not be fixed until noon Saturday.

In Clallam County, power was restored to some 150 customers south of Forks by about 9:45 p.m. after service was interrupted at about 1 p.m., according to the website at https://www.clallampud.net/

Other outage areas included the Port Angeles area off Deer Park Road — where some 600 lost power— Township Line, O’Brien Road and Blue Mountain Road.

Scattered outages were reported in other areas.

Power was restored to Neah Bay and Sekiu areas by 3:50 p.m.

About 150 to 200 people jumped into 49-degree water at Hollywood Beach on Jan. 1, 2025, for the 37th annual Polar Bear Dip. The air temperature was about 39 degrees, so it was a short, brisk dip that they did three times. There was a beach fire to warm the dippers afterward as well as two portable saunas in the parking lot. The event was sponsored by Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County under the leadership of organizer Dan Welden. Hot drinks, tasty muffins and a certificate for participants were available.
