Hearing examiner screening committee seeks volunteers

PORT ANGELES — Clallam County is seeking people to serve on a screening committee for a hearing examiner.

Letters of interest, and resumes if desired, are due by the close of business Friday, March 4.

On Jan. 26, the three county commissioners directed staff to prepare a request for proposals for candidates who would adjudicate land-use matters in a quasi-judicial role as an outside, contracted service provider.

The county now has one-year contracts with Hearing Examiners Lauren Erickson and William Payne. Those contracts expire Feb. 28.

Those agreements likely will be extended to give time for human resources staff and the screening committee to vet, rank and recommend potential candidates for the key position, commissioners said.

Commissioners hope to appoint a primary hearing examiner by June 1.

He or she would operate under a three-year contract with the county.

The job of the screening committee would be to vet the candidates and provide a recommendation to the board of county commissioners.

Before it went to the committee, the county human resources department would verify resumes and conduct background checks and phone references.

For the screening committee, commissioners seek specific categories of representation. They are:

■ One person representing the building community.

■ One person representing the environmental community.

■ One person representing the legal community.

The three volunteers, along with two county staff members, will review applications received for the position of Clallam County hearing examiner, interview candidates meeting the qualifications and make a recommendation of appointment to the county commissioners.

To apply for one of the three volunteer positions, submit a letter of interest to the Clallam County Board of Commissioners’ office, Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles.

A resume also can be submitted to provide qualification information.

For more information, call Rich Sill, Clallam County human resources director, at 360-417-2242.

About 150 to 200 people jumped into 49-degree water at Hollywood Beach on Jan. 1, 2025, for the 37th annual Polar Bear Dip. The air temperature was about 39 degrees, so it was a short, brisk dip that they did three times. There was a beach fire to warm the dippers afterward as well as two portable saunas in the parking lot. The event was sponsored by Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County under the leadership of organizer Dan Welden. Hot drinks, tasty muffins and a certificate for participants were available.
