First Federal Community Foundation is open for business

PORT ANGELES — The First Federal Community Foundation is up and running and accepting applications for grants.

The 501(c)3 private charitable corporation was funded with a gift of $400,000 in cash and 933,360 shares of stock in First Northwest Bancorp, the parent company of First Federal Savings and Loan Association of Port Angeles, upon the bank’s conversion to a public company in January.

As of March 31, the value of First Federal’s gift to its foundation exceeded $12 million.

Said David Flodstrom, the foundation’s president: “With this generous gift, the foundation will build upon First Federal’s legacy of giving back to the communities it serves.”

The foundation will accept applications from communities in which First Federal operates a full-service branch. This currently includes Clallam, Jefferson and Kitsap counties.

Grants will be considered for proposals that conform to one or more of the foundation’s four giving priorities: community support, affordable housing, economic development and community development.

“We are very excited about the foundation’s potential,” said Foundation executive director Karen McCormick, president and CEO of First Federal from 1997 through September 2009.

“Of particular interest to us is the opportunity to collaborate with others who are making a difference locally, and bring additional resources to projects and programs that will enhance the quality of life for all of us.”

Additional information, including grant guidelines, contact information and a downloadable application, is available on the Foundation’s website, www.firstfedcf.org.

The foundation’s mailing address is P.O. Box 351, Port Angeles, WA 98362; phone 360-417-3112 or email staff@firstfedcf.org.

About 150 to 200 people jumped into 49-degree water at Hollywood Beach on Jan. 1, 2025, for the 37th annual Polar Bear Dip. The air temperature was about 39 degrees, so it was a short, brisk dip that they did three times. There was a beach fire to warm the dippers afterward as well as two portable saunas in the parking lot. The event was sponsored by Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County under the leadership of organizer Dan Welden. Hot drinks, tasty muffins and a certificate for participants were available.
