PORT ANGELES — A fire destroyed a small shed and caused between $5,000 and $8,000 in damage to an adjacent home at 433 S. Alder Lane east of Port Angeles on Saturday night,
Crews knocked down the fire within minutes of their 11:18 p.m. arrival, preventing more damage to the house, Clallam County Fire District No. 2 Assistant Chief Dan Huff said Monday.
The fire spread quickly from the 7-foot-by-7-foot shed to an exterior wall of the single-story residence, damaging the siding and overhangs and destroying part of a wooden fence on the opposite side of the shed, Huff said.
Investigators were unable to determine the cause of the fire because of the extent of damage to the shed and its contents.
No value was placed on the shed.
The homeowner, Myra Byam, was not present when the fire started. Her brother, Roger Putnam, had been taking care of property.
Putnam told investigators that the shed contained only scrap lumber, planting soil and an old mattress.
Clallam County Fire District No. 2 had 14 personnel, two engines, one tender and one medic at the scene.
Clallam County Fire District No. 3 and the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office also responded.
