QUILCENE — Fire investigators were expecting to start an investigation Saturday evening or today into the cause of a fire that destroyed a barn on a property off Quilcene Road on Saturday morning.
The fire struck the wood-and-metal barn filled with wood and hay in the 1000 block of Quilcene Road at about 11 a.m., said Chief Larry Karp of the Quilcene fire department.
No injuries were reported, and no other buildings were damaged by the fire, Karp said.
“No cause on this yet,” he said. “We’ll look into it this evening or tomorrow.
“We don’t see anything suspicious about this,” he added.
Karp said volunteer firefighters who happened to be driving past the property saw the blaze and called it in.
Firefighters arriving at 11:03 a.m. found the 120-square-foot barn engulfed in flames, Karp said.
Crews had the blaze knocked down in about 30 minutes, he said.
He said the barn is likely a total loss.
Fire crews remained on scene for at least five hours Saturday afternoon clearing all the hay and split wood from the barn, Karp said.
A total of 25 firefighters representing all four Jefferson County fire districts responded to the blaze, he added.
