Earth Day activities set across the Peninsula this week

Celebrations in honor of Earth Day are planned across the North Olympic Peninsula.

Events are planned Wednesday, Friday and Saturday in honor of Earth Day, which is Friday.

Sustainability lecture

PORT ANGELES — Daniel Underwood will present “Envisioning Sustainability” on Wednesday.

The lecture will be from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the M Building at Peninsula College, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd.

Underwood will talk about ecologically sustainable policies to promote economic and social welfare.

Underwood has a doctorate in economics from the University of Utah.

Taming Bigfoot awards

PORT TOWNSEND — Awards in Taming Bigfoot, a contest among 13 teams to decrease their carbon footprints, will be given Friday.

The awards celebration will be from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Quimper Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 2333 San Juan Ave.

The contest was launched in December by Local 20/20 Climate Change Outreach Group, which is a subset of the Climate Action Committee formed by the city of Port Townsend and Jefferson County to cut greenhouse gas emissions to a point that is 80 percent below 1990 levels by 2050.

Wild Birds Unlimited

GARDINER — Wild Birds Unlimited will host its 11th annual Earth Day celebration from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. ­Saturday.

Activities at the business at 275953 U.S. Highway 101 will include a look at rescued birds of prey and songbirds, music by The Wind People, tours of the grounds and booths set up by various local artists.

General admission is free. Tours are $5.

The business will collect supplies for the Northwest Raptor & Wildlife Center and Discovery Bay Bird Rescue.

Earth Day Beautification

PORT TOWNSEND — The Port Townsend Main Street Program plans beautification projects Saturday.

Volunteers will meet at the Boiler Room, 711 Water St., and at Adams Street Park from 9 a.m. to noon.

They will help paint the Tyler Street staircase and the fence next to The Green Eyeshade, and work in the park.

Fort Worden cleanup

PORT TOWNSEND — Volunteers are sought to clean up Fort Worden State Park from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

The Friends of Fort Worden State Park will provide tea, coffee and snacks.

Volunteers will meet at the main Artillery Hill gate. They are urged to bring gloves and water.
