Camp-out to raise funds for Captain Joseph House on Friday; other fundraisers set for Port Angeles nonprofit starting Tuesday

PORT ANGELES — Betsy Reed Schultz is gearing up for an all-night camp-out to raise money for the Captain Joseph House.

The Gazebo Camp-In will be from 3 p.m. Friday through 3 p.m. Saturday at the house at 1108 S. Oak St.

Schultz, Captain Joseph House founder, will take donations as she camps out for 24 hours.

Schultz and her crew are remodeling her building, the former Tudor Inn bed-and-breakfast, into a retreat to provide an all-expense-paid weeklong respite for families of fallen members of the armed services.

A soft grand opening is tentatively scheduled for May 24, with the first families to be welcomed later in the summer.

Once opened, the house will be the only sanctuary of its kind in the nation. It will serve up to three families a week, 11 months a year.

This weekend while Schultz, who will have company on her camp-out, lives in the gazebo, s’mores will be roasted in a fire pit and a video of the house remodeling will be shown.

Guided tours of the house are planned from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

It will be the second fundraiser of the year for the foundation.

The first is set for Tuesday.

The Black Bear Diner at 1471 E. Washington St. in Sequim will donate 15 percent of its receipts from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. to the foundation.

Other fundraisers are coming up.

■   On Jan. 24 will be Jump-In to 2015.

It will feature a barbecue dinner with the Just Friends Trio at Sit-N-Bull Tavern, 510 Beech St., Port Angeles, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Tickets are $55 for general admission and $50 for veterans.

The deadline for buying tickets is Jan. 19.

To buy, phone 360-460-4079.

■ On Feb. 7 will be the Captain Joseph Family Festival with a prime rib dinner, dance, auction and children’s carnival at Shelton Elks Lodge 2467, 741 S.E. Craig Road, Shelton, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Tickets are $15 for general admission and $10 for veterans.

■ On March 28 will be the Captain Joseph House third annual dinner and auction at C’est Si Bon, 23 Cedar Park Drive, Port Angeles.

Tickets are $85 for general admission and $75 for veterans.

Board officers

As the year begins, the Captain Joseph House Foundation has new board officers.

Kathy Charlton, operations director of Target Focus Training — and the former owner of Olympic Winery — will serve as president for the coming year. She was vice president last year.

She replaces former President Jim DeBoo, who remains on the board.

DeBoo is director of member services for the speaker of the California Assembly, John A. Perez, Sacramento, Calif.

Joe Borden, retired veteran and project team leader for the foundation, will serve as vice president.

Other members of the board are Mary Jo Koepke of Sutter Medical Foundation in Auburn, Calif.; Jeff Winston, vice president and controller of JIL Design Group Inc. of California; Sam Bessy, executive director of Chi Psi National Fraternity and Foundation of Nashville, Tenn.; Heather M. Lazark, senior physical therapist with Kaiser Permanente in Sacramento; Kate Emanuel, senior vice president of the Advertising Council Washington of the District of Columbia; Jennifer Wettstein, global brand manager for IBM Global Process Services of Denver; Karen Powell, consultant to business and nonprofits, of Port Angeles; and Schultz, who is the executive director.

For more information about upcoming events or general questions, phone Sam Coyle at 360-460-4079 or Schultz at 360-460-7848, visit www.CaptainJosephHouseFoundation.org or www.facebook.com/CaptainJosephHouse, or email CPTJosephHouse@cjhf.org.
