Class to create felt vests is on Saturday in Sequim

SEQUIM — The next event at the Center of Infinite Reflections features a professional sheep-shearer and fiber artist, plus up to 30 people creating one-of-a-kind felt vests.

The event runs from about 10 a.m. to about 3 p.m. on Saturday.

Tim Sorg, a sheep shearer from the Olympia area, will come to the center southwest of Sequim to lead its first-ever felt-vest workshop.

He will teach participants how to use wool from the sheep that graze on the center’s property, said organizer Susan Davis.

Other shades of high-quality wool will be available too, for adding fanciful decorations to the vests.

Sorg “is going to bring some different colors, so we can make some interesting things,” Davis promised.

“Each [vest] will be different, and unique to the personality of the newly minted fiber artist.”

Felt needles a must

Davis urges participants to bring felt needles, which can be purchased for $5 from Ellen Lloyd, who is a vendor at the Sequim Open Aire Market from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday on West Cedar Street in downtown Sequim.

To order needles ahead of time, phone Lloyd at 360-681-6088.

Each felt-vest artist will also need to bring a watering can with a spout because, Davis said, “you keep watering the wool as you’re shaping it.”

And “this is a messy workshop, so wear your grubbies.”

Since the workshop runs through early afternoon, participants are asked to also bring a dish to share.

The class will start at 10 a.m. and go “till we get those vests created,” probably around 3 p.m., Davis predicted.

The cost is $35 at the door.

Davis also asks participants to call ahead, “so we can prepare for those participating in the adventure.”

The number to reserve a spot is 360-460-7941.
