WEEKEND: Deadline today for Feiro center’s two program nominations

NOTE: “Today” and “tonight” refer to Friday, Jan. 23.

PORT ANGELES — The deadline for nominations for two Feiro Marine Life Center programs is today.

The center is taking nominations for the [re]MAKE Feiro Youth Council and for its third annual Marine Science Student of the Year award.

The [re]MAKE Feiro Youth Council is a new program that will meet for five sessions starting Feb. 14.

Youths ages 10 to 14 with a variety of interests and hobbies are sought.

This council marks the first partnership between the Feiro Marine Life Center and the University of Washington’s graduate program in museology.

Intern Michelle Reichelt designed program activities for the five sessions, which will help participants connect with Web design, digital photography, martial arts and Minecraft, as well as the marine environment of Port Angeles and help Feiro develop future youth programs.

An educator or community member can nominate a student by filling out an application form and having the parent of the student sign it.

The third annual Marine Science Student of the Year award will be presented at the Fish on the Fence Gala on Feb. 6 at the Red Lion Hotel, 221 N. Lincoln St.

Last year’s winners were Alex Wise, who studied whether using historic Makah fishing gear could reduce bycatch, and Karsten Turrey, for dedicated volunteer service to local marine and watershed education and conservation efforts.

Nomination forms and information on [re]MAKE Feiro and the Marine Science Student of the Year award are available at http://tinyurl.com/pdn-remakefeiro.
