UPDATE: Manhunt west of Port Angeles seeks man after shot fired this morning

PORT ANGELES — Police seeking an armed man in a ground-and-air search west of Port Angeles say one man may have been injured in a fight during which a shot was fired.

Law enforcement officers are searching for Mario Wayne Hackney, who fled on foot after shooting at another man — and missing — at about 11 a.m. today in front of a residence near the intersection of Cameron Road and U.S. Highway 101, Port Angeles Deputy Police Chief Brian Smith said.

Hackney is 45, white, stands 5-feet-9-inches tall and weighs 190 pounds, Smith said, adding that Hackney was shirtless and wearing blue jeans. He has several tattoos on both arms as well as his chest.

Smith said an unidentified man appeared to have been cut in a fight with Hackney when Hackney fired the gun.

“One of the weapons we are concerned about may have been a shotgun,” Smith said early this afternoon.

Hackney “should be considered armed and dangerous,” he said.

The search area will consist of “where the leads take us,” Smith added.

Port Angeles residents “should expect to see a law enforcement presence in the air, things they don’t normally see,” he said.

A U.S. Customs and Border Protection helicopter is aiding in the search.

Also assisting are law enforcement officers with the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office, State Patrol, Border Patrol and Lower Elwha Klallam tribe.

A car associated with Hackney was left at the scene of the shooting, Smith said.

“We’re still actively in a containment, ground search and investigative mode,” Smith said.

Anyone who sees Hackney should not approach him but should call 9-1-1, Smith said.
