Candidate filing week for the Aug. 7 primary and Nov. 6 general election reached the halfway point Wednesday in Clallam County as more prospective public officeholders submitted their paperwork for voting season — including another candidate vying for county Commissioner Mike Chapman’s position.
Sandra Long, who filed as an independent candidate, will run for the Port Angeles District 2 county commissioner seat held by the three-term incumbent, an independent and a former Republican who has said he intends to run for re-election.
Republican Maggie Roth and Democrat Dale Holiday also have filed for the position.
Chapman had not filed as of 3 p.m. Wednesday.
Long, 70, a former professor of psychology who lives in Port Angeles with her husband, Barrow, moved to Port Angeles in 2003 from Shreveport, La., her hometown, she said Wednesday.
Volunteer, specialist
“I guess you could say I’m a fiscal conservative and a social liberal,” said Long, a community volunteer and aptitude-testing specialist who owns the consulting firm Behavioral Analysis LLC.
“I voted more Democratic in my adult years, but I’ve also voted for lots of Republicans and do not go by party. I go by the person,” she said.
Long has served on the board of United Way of Clallam County, the county mental health board and the dispute resolution board, and has been in the Rotary Club.
She currently serves on the board of directors for the Port Angeles Fine Arts Center, she added.
Long said she has never held elective public office.
“I am running for the position because I feel like I’ve done enough volunteer work in this county that I know the county pretty well,” she said.
Wednesday was the third day of a weeklong filing period that lasts from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily through Friday at the county Elections Center, 223 E. Fourth St. in Port Angeles.
Open seats in Clallam County also include all three Superior Court judge positions, West End District 3 public utility district commissioner and 67 precinct committee officer positions.
Ballots will be mailed to voters July 18 for the state’s Aug. 7 top-two primary.
Ballots will be mailed to voters Oct. 17 for the Nov. 6 general election.
There were no other filers for elective office in Clallam County — not including those filing for precinct committee officers — who were listed on the county government website, www.clallam.net, as of 3 p.m. Wednesday.
More candidates
The following new regional and statewide candidates who filed late Tuesday and through 3 p.m. Wednesday afternoon were listed on the county government website, which is linked to the Washington Election Information System:
■ Richard B. Sanders of Olympia, a former state Supreme Court justice, filed for the six-year Position 9 seat being vacated by Justice Tom Chambers, who is retiring.
■ Republican Mike the Mover of Mill Creek filed for the position held by Democrat Maria Cantwell of Seattle, who is seeking re-election.
■ Republican David Eichner of Tacoma filed for the 6th Congressional District seat being vacated by 18-term Democratic incumbent Norm Dicks. The district includes Clallam, Jefferson, Grays Harbor, Kitsap, Mason and Pierce counties.
■ Democrat Rob Hill of Shoreline and L. Dale Sorgen of Sultan, who filed as an independent, filed for the position of governor being vacated by incumbent Democrat Chris Gregoire.
Also filing for the position as Republicans were Shahram Hadian of Mill Creek and Javier Lopez of Lacey.
■ Republican Bill Finkbeiner of Bellevue filed for the seat held by Democratic incumbent Lt. Gov. Brad Owen, who is seeking re-election.
■ Incumbent Democratic state Treasurer Jim McIntire of Seattle filed for re-election.
■ Republican Stephen Pidgeon of Everett filed for the state attorney general position held by Republican Rob McKenna, who has said he plans to run for governor.
■ John Patterson Blair of Vashon filed for the nonpartisan superintendent of public instruction position held by incumbent Randy Dorn, who has filed for re-election.
■ Republican John Adams and Brian Berend of Auburn, who filed as an independent, filed for the insurance commissioner position held by incumbent Democrat Mike Kreidler, who is running for re-election.
■ Jim Foley of Olympia filed for the Division 2, District 2 state Court of Appeals position that covers Clallam, Jefferson, Grays Harbor, Kitsap, Mason and Thurston counties.
