Students get into the spirit of homecoming

PORT ANGELES – The Port Angeles High School Roughriders will play their way into the spirit for Friday’s homecoming game.

The theme this year is “Riders on Broadway.”

Each class selected a Broadway play as the individual theme.

“What we were looking for was a larger theme for the whole school that each class could have an individual theme under,” said Rachael Ward, the high school leadership teacher.

“We had thought about ‘Decades,’ but then with the lip synching contest at the assembly before the game we thought this would be a great idea.”

During the lip synching contest the songs will all be show tunes.

All this leads up to the big game against Bremerton High School at 7 p.m. Friday at Civic Field.

The week will be full of what the school calls “Spirit Days” of different themes – sports jersey day, decades day and, on Thursday, Broadway costume day.

On costume day, students will wear clothing representing their respective Broadway show – freshmen have “Phantom of the Opera,” sophomores “Hairspray,” juniors “West Side Story,” and seniors “Grease.”

“On that day, we’ll have the seniors wearing ’50s-era clothing, and so on,” Ward said.

Also on Thursday, the annual Flag Football and Tug O’ War competition will be held at 7:30 p.m. at Civic Field.

Admission to the game is one can of food, which will be donated to the Food Bank

Also utilizing the themes, the classes made hanging murals to be hung in the student center. They will be judged later in the week.

The climax of the week leading up to the game will begin with a 5:30 p.m. parade on Friday.

It starts in the courthouse parking lot, goes south on Peabody, heads east on Fifth Street, turns north on Francis Street, then east on Fourth Street and ending at Civic Field.

In addition to viewing the parade, spectators will enjoy the band, dance team, cheerleaders, various clubs and teams from the high school participating in the parade with their own floats.

Spectators at the game will also be treated to a fireworks show.

“It will be a really professional show,” Ward said.

“It should be a lot of fun.”

The activities will wrap up on Saturday with a dance from 8 to 11 p.m. at the Port Angeles High School Gym.
