Stage 3 water alert issued for Clallam Bay system

CARLSBORG — Clallam County Public Utility District No. 1 has declared a stage 3 water alert for its Clallam Bay/Sekiu Water System and a stage 4 alert for its Island View Water System.

The Clallam Bay/Sekiu Water System draws its water from a well field near the Hoko River, and streamflow is used as an indicator of upcoming groundwater shortages in the region.

Based on a streamflow forecast provided by the U.S. Geological Survey, Hoko River streamflow will drop to about 14 cubic feet per second in less than a week.

The district’s stage 3 response prohibits vehicle washing, except for safety-related purposes, and limits outdoor watering.

Even-numbered addresses may water outdoors on even-numbered days. Odd-numbered addresses may water outdoors on odd-numbered days.

Water for the Island View Water System is supplied from Olsen Creek.

Low flows in Olsen Creek may require the PUD to begin trucking in water from the neighboring Clallam Bay/Sekiu Water System within the next week.

The district’s stage 4 response prohibits outdoor water use and calls upon customers to minimize indoor water use.

Some voluntary conservation measures include:

• Reducing outdoor water use.

• Fixing leaky faucets and toilets.

• Taking shorter showers, not baths.

• Installing low-flow showerheads and faucets.

• Operating automatic dish and clothes washers only when full.

• Collecting water that is wasted while waiting for hot water to reach the faucet and using it to water plants.

• Using water-efficient appliances.

The PUD previously issued stage 2 alerts for its Fairview, Gales Addition, Mount Angeles, Monroe, Panoramic, Carlsborg and Evergreen water systems.
