In the photo at lower right, Sophie Gist and John Thomson, both of Seattle, operate a camera-carrying drone aircraft to get a bird’s-eye view of a mudslide across Place Road west of Port Angeles on Saturday.
Thomson, who was visiting relatives cut off by the slide, sent the drone over the scene to see the extent of the blockage.

The closure in a slide-prone area of the road closed the pavement for about four hours starting just before 1 p.m. There were no reports of injuries or damaged vehicles.
