PORT ANGELES — A 28-year-old Sequim man who led authorities on an off-road chase in a rural area west of Carlsborg on Aug. 28 is scheduled to be arraigned Friday on a charge of attempting to elude a pursuing police vehicle.
Richard Ivan Huggins was charged Thursday in Clallam County Superior Court.
Huggins remained in the Clallam County jail Monday on a $22,500 bond.
He was arrested last Sunday on Barnes Road near Sequim when Clallam County Sheriff’s deputies, with the assistance of Border Patrol agents, were looking for another man to serve a federal warrant, according to Ron Cameron, chief criminal deputy for the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office.
Instead, they found Huggins.
Huggins had eluded authorities on Aug. 29.
Deputies had arrived at a residence on Cliff Robinson Lane to serve a federal narcotics warrant on a woman that had been a passenger in the pickup truck Huggins was driving, according to Clallam County Sheriff’s Sgt. John Keegan.
Huggins, who was wanted on local warrants, also was to be arrested, Keegan said.
Huggins took off, driving the pickup through a field and over an embankment to Sherburne Road and turning south as a deputy pursued.
The chase reached speeds of 60 mph on Sherburne and proceeded to Atterberry Road.
Huggins crossed three fields and plowed through three fences before the truck he was driving hit a tree and stopped.
A police dog was unable to track Huggins at the scene, resulting in a warrant being issued for vehicle theft and eluding a police vehicle.
Attempting to elude a pursuing police vehicle is a Class C felony punishable by a maximum of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
