PORT ANGELES — A Port Angeles High School student escaped injury when his pickup truck hit ice and rolled into a ditch on East Park Avenue early Monday morning.
The student was a 16-year-old male, and the road was closed for ice removal for about half an hour, said Port Angeles Police Officer
Brian Stamon.
Names of juveniles are not made public by authorities.
The student was driving a Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck at about 7:30 a.m., headed east on East Park Avenue when he hit a patch of ice, over-corrected and rolled into a ditch, Stamon said.
“It’s not common. I haven’t seen a collision like that for a while,” he said.
Stamon said the road was closed until 8:15 a.m. for city de-icing equipment to clear the road.
A city road worker monitored the city streets Monday to stay ahead of the morning frost, he said.
Officers who traveled the road earlier in the morning reported that it was clear, and Stamon said he believed the ice didn’t form until after 7 a.m.
Other roads reported to be icy Monday morning were parts of Marine Drive and West Second Street between Valley and Cherry streets, he said.
