Nominations sought for environmental stewards in Port Townsend; deadline is Aug. 27

PORT TOWNSEND — The Port Townsend Marine Science Center is seeking nominations for the 2014 Eleanor Stopps Environmental Leadership Award.

Nominations must be submitted by email or received at the science center’s office, 532 Battery Way, Port Townsend, WA 98368, before 5 p.m. Aug. 27.

The winner and runners-up will be honored at the science center’s Stewardship Breakfast at the Fort Worden Commons at 8 a.m. Oct. 1.

Nominations are in recognition of citizens on the North Olympic Peninsula who are stewards of the environment and have demonstrated leadership in efforts to protect the natural world.

Eleanor Stopps, who died of cancer in April 2012 at the age of 92, was considered responsible for the 1982 establishment of Protection Island National Wildlife Refuge, the only one created during the Ronald Reagan administration.

In the 1960s and ’70s, she testified before the state Legislature and Congress for the refuge.

The award is granted annually to a Peninsula resident who has led a successful resource conservation effort that benefits the Peninsula and its residents directly, and acted as a community catalyst for programs, initiatives or ventures that demonstrate a commitment to the future of the Earth and its biodiversity.

For more information or to request a nomination form, phone Brian Kay at 360-385-5582 or email info@ptmsc.org.

The form also can be downloaded from www.ptmsc.org.
