NEWS BRIEFS: Port Townsend CoLab party, presentation this evening . . . and other items

PORT TOWNSEND — The CoLab will celebrate its second anniversary with a presentation and party from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today.

The celebration will be at 237 Taylor St., on the second floor above the Silverwater Cafe.

At 5:30 p.m., the presentation “Five Minutes of Brilliance” will begin.

It will showcase stories on the theme of collaboration and innovation.

Speakers will range from high school students to the leaders of established institutions and will cover topics including business, community building, agriculture, technology and the arts.

Energy lunch slated today

PORT TOWNSEND — A Jefferson County Energy Lunch Program will be held in the Port Townsend Yacht Club’s clubhouse, 2503 Washington St., at 12:30 p.m. today.

“Developing Electric Propulsion Systems for Jefferson County Boats” will be presented by Alex Wilken, family owner of Seattle Boat Works LLC.

During the free lecture, Wilken will focus on electric propulsion systems, including vessel refits and new construction of electric boats.

Wilken will cover current trends in electric boat construction and explain economic and environmental advantages.

All are welcome to bring a brown bag lunch and arrive at noon to chat with other local energy professionals and alternative energy advocates.

Land trust event

PORT TOWNSEND — A Jefferson Land Trust Volunteer event, “Summer Stewardship at Illahee Preserve,” will take place at the Illahee Preserve on Creek View Lane from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today.

Summer Stewardship is a series of volunteer events to explore and care for protected habitat in East Jefferson County.

Volunteers of all ages and abilities are welcome.

The land trust will provide tools and instructions.

Participants should dress comfortably for the weather and bring water/snacks.

To get to the preserve from state Highway 19 between Port Townsend and Port Hadlock, take Prospect Avenue toward Kala Point and turn right on Creek View Lane. The preserve and parking are at the end of the road.

Free concert set

SEQUIM — In the last concert of its season, the Sequim Community Orchestra will offer the music of Beethoven, Bizet, Schubert and Tchaikovsky — plus the suite from television’s “Downton Abbey” — on Friday night.

The 48-piece orchestra, directed by Phil Morgan-Ellis, will step up at 7 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 S. Blake Ave.

After the concert, attendees are invited to have refreshments with the musicians.
