NEWS BRIEFS — Panel on school gun violence set tonight in Port Ludlow . . . and other items

PORT LUDLOW — The Peace Lutheran Fellowship is sponsoring a “Citizens for Safe Students” panel discussion on gun violence in schools at the Beach Club, 121 Marina View Drive, at 7 tonight.

The purpose of the meeting is to address the issue of keeping students safe from school shootings.

No school shootings have occurred recently on North Olympic Peninsula campuses.

On the panel will be Whitney Meissner, principal of Chimacum High School; a representative of the Sheriff’s Office; Wendy Davis, one of two candidates for Jefferson County sheriff; John Jamison, Chimacum High teacher; Amy Yaley, parent of a student; Deidra Morris, Chimacum High student; Kathleen Kler, one of two candidates for county commissioner; Ron McClung, pastor of Peace Lutheran Fellowship in Port Ludlow; and Julie Canterbury, mental health specialist at Jefferson Mental Health Service in Port Townsend.

Meeting canceled

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Utility Advisory Committee, a subcommittee of the of the City Council, has canceled this month’s meeting.

The panel had intended to meet today.

The next regularly scheduled meeting will be at 3 p.m. Oct. 14 in the Jack Pittis Room at City Hall, 321 E. Fifth St.

Music for babies on tap at PA Library

PORT ANGELES — Music for Baby & Me storytimes will be offered at the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St., starting Friday at 11:15 a.m.

This program features songs, fingerplays and rhymes for babies up to 24 months old and their parents or caregivers.

Music for Baby & Me storytimes are free and will occur every Friday until Nov. 21 and from Jan. 9 to May 22.

After each session, parents and caregivers are welcome to stay, visit and swap information. Those who attend three sessions will receive a free board book or audio CD to take home.

Horse demo slated

PORT TOWNSEND — Mitzi Summers will give a “Long Lining and Double Lunging the Horse” demonstration at Heron Hill Equine, 241 Sand Road, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday.

The demo is free and open to the public.

Groundwork with horses can be invaluable in the process of either preparing a young horse to be ridden or in further developing suppleness and strength in an older horse.

Summers will go through the step-by-step process involved in preparing a young horse to be ridden or in further developing suppleness and strength in an older horse.

Fiber trunk show

PORT ANGELES — The Cabled Fiber Studio, 106 N. Laurel St., will hold a special trunk show from Susan Stumbaugh of Abstract Fiber from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday.

Samples from Stumbaugh’s yarns and spinning fibers in blends of merino, BFL, silk, yak, cashmere, Tencel and alpaca will be on display.

Lace weight, sock, sport and worsted yarns will be available.

Stumbaugh will demonstrate the Mawata knitting technique as well.

There will be drawings throughout the day, and a grand prize drawing will be held during the official reception at 6:30 p.m.
