NEWS BRIEFS: No landing practice set in Coupeville this week . . . and other items

COUPEVILLE — There will be no field carrier landing practice operations for aircraft stationed at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island at the outlying field in Coupeville today through Saturday.

The schedule is subject to change to meet mission requirements.

Intern celebration

PORT ANGELES — The work of Clallam Marine Resources Committee’s interns will be celebrated at the Port Angeles Yacht Club, 1305 Marine Drive, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday.

Marine debris, invasive species, oil spill response, Olympia oyster restoration and education and outreach projects will be presented.

Refreshments will be served.

Plant clinics

PORT TOWNSEND — The Jefferson County Master Gardeners are offering free plant clinics Mondays through the end of September except holidays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the WSU Extension Office in Point Hudson, 380 Jefferson St.

Clients should bring in samples in plastic bags of plants — stems, leaves, flowers, fruits or cones — for answers to gardening questions and diagnoses of plant problems.

Master Gardeners also can help identify garden pests.

Senior nutrition

PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles Senior Nutrition Site dinners will be served at 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday at the Port Angeles Senior and Community Center, 328 E. Seventh St.

A suggested donation is $5 for those who are 60 or older.

People younger than 60 can attend for $8.

Reservations should be made 24 hours in advance to 360-457-8921.

Menus are subject to change.

■ Tuesday: Marinated veggies, meat lasagna, steamed greens, cantaloupe, garlic bread and baked custard.

■ Wednesday: Green salad, beef stew, sliced oranges, dinner roll and watermelon.

■ Thursday: Tomato Florentine, green salad with hard-boiled egg, grilled cheese, grapes and strawberry ice cream.

■ Friday: Cranberry salad, roasted turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, cut corn and pumpkin cookies.

Free popcorn for those who donate

PORT ANGELES — Anyone who donates a pair of used eyeglasses at the Port Angeles Lions Club food booth during the Clallam County Fair, to be held Thursday through Aug. 23, will receive a free bag of popcorn.

The food booth will be located next to the grandstand.

All donations are acceptable: prescription glasses, readers, sunglasses, broken glasses and plastic and metal frames.

Children’s glasses are especially needed.

Discussion group

SEQUIM — The Sequim Great Decisions Discussion Group will meet at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave., from 10 a.m. to noon Friday.

The topic is “Hi, Robot.”

The suggested background readings for the discussion are the five articles grouped as “Hi, Robot” from the July/August 2015 issue of Foreign Affairs.

Blood drive

SEQUIM — Rotary Clubs of Sequim will sponsor a blood drive at SunLand Golf & Country Club, SunLand Clubhouse, 109 Hilltop Drive, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday.

It is closed for lunch from 1:45 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. Appointments are available, and walk-ins are welcome between appointments.

Club open house

SEQUIM — The Clallam County Gem & Mineral Association will hold its spring open house at the club’s shop, 81 Hooker Road, Unit 5, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Bring rocks to identify and see and learn how to cut rocks and polish stones for use in jewelry or display.

Club members will be available to show off the shop and its facilities, as well as answer questions.

Watch the ongoing demonstrations, which include rock cutting and polishing, metal smithing, wire wrapping polished stones, casting, creating chain mail jewelry, other lapidary activities and faceting stones.

The club is a nonprofit association organized for educational activity in the science of geology as it relates to the discovery of rock, mineral and fossils.

Food bank benefit

PORT TOWNSEND — The fourth annual Fundraiser and Yard Sale sponsoring the Jefferson County Food Bank and the Jefferson County Pet Food Pantry will be at Sound Storage, 606 E. Park Ave., from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

There will be more than 20 sellers on site and a silent auction.

Food donations for people and pets will be accepted.

All cash donations will go to the pet food bank.
