Man dies when pickup hits tree in Dungeness Valley; passenger injured

SEQUIM — A 38-year-old Port Angeles man was found dead in the wreckage of a small pickup truck that crashed into a tree on Woodcock Road northwest of Sequim.

A passenger in the truck was injured and flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

The Clallam County Sheriff’s Office did not identify either person in a prepared statement about the crash, which apparently ended a wild ride in the Dungeness Valley on Sunday afternoon.

Speed and alcohol consumption appear to be contributing factors, the statement said.

The Sheriff’s Office described the events leading up to the crash:

— About 3:15 p.m., dispatchers received a report that a small pickup truck was driving erratically thrlugh a field in the 100 block of Fitzgerald Road near Old Olympic Highway.

— About three minutes later, the same dispatchers received another report that a pickup with a similar description ran into the side of a house in the 8000 block of Old Olympic Highway. A witness wrote down the license plate number and reported it to authorities.

— Then at 3:25 p.m., the pickup with the same license number was reported crashed into a tree on Woodcock Road just west of Kitchen-Dick Road. Emergency personnel from Clallam County Fire District No. 3 and the county Sheriff’s Office pronounced dead at the scene.
