PORT TOWNSEND — A Quilcene man accused of robbing the U.S. Bank in Quilcene in November has been denied a bail reduction after prosecutors said he was a flight risk.
Ulysses Corwin Nevermissashot, 26, pleaded not guilty to a charge of first-degree robbery when he was arraigned in Jefferson County Superior Court on Friday.
His trial is set for Sept. 30 through
Oct. 1.
Nevermissashot remained in the Jefferson County jail Saturday on $50,000 bond, an amount that defense attorney Richard Davies requested be reduced to $20,000.
Deputy Prosecutor Chris Ashcraft argued against the reduction, saying Nevermissashot, who moved to Quilcene two months before allegedly committing the robbery, was a flight risk.
Superior Court Judge Keith Harper agreed, saying, “These allegations are serious, and we have a lot to lose if he leaves the area.”
Harper set an omnibus hearing Aug. 30, a readiness hearing Sept. 6 and a pretrial hearing Sept. 20.
Nevermissashot was arrested Tuesday and charged Wednesday with the Nov. 15 robbery of the bank branch at 14890 Center Road in Quilcene, the first robbery at that branch since it opened in the 1970s, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
The Sheriff’s Office said Nevermissashot robbed a bank teller at gunpoint and fled on foot with an undisclosed sum of money.
No shots were fired, and no one was hurt.
Forensic evidence tied Nevermissashot to the crime, the Sheriff’s Office said, adding that a smoldering hand-rolled cigarette found at the scene carried his DNA.
Investigators also said fingerprints on a black plastic bag that fell from the robber’s grasp matched a fingerprint belonging to Nevermissashot’s roommate, who said she was missing a package of black plastic bags.
According to Kitsap County Superior Court records, Nevermissashot in December 2007 pleaded guilty to one count each of domestic violence and third-degree assault, and was sentenced to 13 months minus 95 days of time served.
The records said he also had been convicted of third-degree assault in Klickitat County after a 2004 incident.
The investigation into the Quilcene bank robbery remains active while Jefferson County investigators work to determine the identities of accomplices, they said.
