A free self-guided tour of Jefferson County’s agricultural production systems will be offered during the 11th annual Jefferson County Farm Tour on Saturday, Sept. 14, and Sunday, Sept. 15.
Fiber farms will host spinning, weaving, roving and plant dye demonstrations and sell fiber goods from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days, and a tour of 24 commercial will be offered from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 15.
A pig roast is planned from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sept. 14 at the Chimacum Corner Farmstand, 9122 Rhody Drive.
Chef Dan Ratigan will prepare dishes using ingredients grown or made locally, and there will be live music and a beer/wine/cider tent.
Tickets for the roast are $15 per plate, with drink tickets available separately. Tickets are available at the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce office or at http://tinyurl.com/pigroasttickets.
Commercial farms
On Sept. 15’s tour of commercial farms, visitors will see livestock, cheese making and other demonstrations; take part in apple tastings; learn about shellfish farming; and listen to live music and entertainment.
Many farms will host food vendors serving locally inspired dishes, and there will be educational farm activities for the whole family.
Farms on the tour include dairy, meat, fiber, fruit, vegetable and shellfish production.
They are located around much of East Jefferson County and in Port Townsend, Marrowstone Island, Chimacum, Discovery Bay, Quilcene and Port Ludlow.
The Port Townsend Food Co-op, 414 Kearney St.; Chimacum Corner Farmstand; and Quilcene Village Store, 294235 U.S. Highway 101, will serve as information hubs for the tour.
‘Farm Tour Guide’
Attendees can pick up the “Farm Tour Guide,” including a map of participating farms, and find carpool companions.
Attendees can make the rounds of the tour by bicycle as part of the Edible Pedal, a co-sponsored event with edibleSEATTLE.
