Incumbents re-elected to Clallam, Jefferson conservation district boards

Incumbents on the conservation district boards of Clallam and Jefferson counties have been re-elected because they were the only candidates who filed.

Sequim-area resident Don Hatler has been re-elected to the Clallam Conservation District board of supervisors. Hatler was the only candidate to file for the office by the Jan. 29 deadline.

Elijah Christian remains on the Jefferson County Conservation District board for another three years after he was the lone candidate to file by the Feb. 4 deadline.

According to state conservation district election rules, if an incumbent is the only eligible candidate to file for the position, no election is required.

Polling, which had been scheduled for Feb. 28 in Clallam County and March 4 in Jefferson County, will not be performed.

Terms also are expiring for three-year appointed positions: the seat held by Ben Smith in Clallam County and that held by Roger Short in Jefferson County.

Appointees are named by the Washington State Conservation Commission, which must receive applications by March 31.

Five positions comprise each of the conservation district boards.

Each serves a three-year term of office without compensation. Registered voters elect three of the positions, while the other two are appointed by the state.

Applications for appointed positions are available in Clallam County from the Clallam Conservation District, Armory Square, 228 W. First St., Suite H, Port Angeles, WA 98362; by phoning 360-775-3747, ext. 5; or by visiting www.clallamcd.org.

In Jefferson County, they are available at the office at 205 W. Pattison St. in Port Hadlock or by phoning 360-385-4105.

Additional information is on the Washington State Conservation Commission website at www.scc.wa.gov or by phoning 360-407-6215.
