Clallam: Highway 101 carnage spurs safety corridor project; kickoff Wednesday

A crushed car, destroyed in a fiery street racing crash.

A parade of law enforcement vehicles.

A Christmas tree bearing the names of those who have died in car collisions on the North Olympic Peninsula in the past four years.

These are reminders of what can happen to motorists on local roads.

On Wednesday, these visuals will be part of the official start of the Driving 101 Traffic Safety Project, an effort of several agencies, businesses and local citizens to boost enforcement, engineering and education on a 32-mile stretch of U.S. Highway 101.

The public is invited to the kickoff, which begins at 2 p.m. at Deer Park Cinemas, east of Port Angeles on Highway 101 and Deer Park Road.

There, the project’s steering committee will release its action plan for the next two years of the project.

Honor Guard present

The Clallam County Sheriff’s Honor Guard will present the colors, County Commissioner Mike Chapman will read a proclamation supporting the project, and representatives of the Washington State Patrol, state Department of Transportation, Washington Traffic Safety Commission and county Sheriff’s Department will speak.

A traffic sign with the project’s logo, designed by Port Angeles graphic artist Laurel Black, will be unveiled.

Dan Willis of Port Townsend, a docent at the Point Wilson Lighthouse at Fort Worden State Park, conducts a tour for interested visitors on Thursday. The lighthouse was built in 1878 when Congress approved $8,000 for the light and foghorns. Although the facility is still an active U.S. Coast Guard station, the equipment is monitored and operated remotely and no keepers are present. Regular tours on Saturdays and Sundays will resume in May. (Steve Mullensky/for Peninsula Daily News)
