PORT ANGELES — Clallam County Fire District No. 2 Chief Sam Phillips has become one of 41 designated chief fire officers in the state, district officials announced this week.
Phillips was recognized for the professional designation at the district’s commissioners meeting Tuesday.
Board Chairman Tom Martin said Phillips is now one of 1,017 designated chief fire officers worldwide.
The Commission on Professional Crediting designated Phillips as a chief fire officer Dec. 15.
The process involves an assessment of the applicant’s education, experience, professional development, technical competencies, contributions to the profession and community involvement, officials said.
The Commission on Professional Credentialing, part of the Center for Public Safety Excellence Inc., administers the chief fire officer designation program from its headquarters in Chantilly, Va.
Phillips has been with the district for more than three years.
Fire District No. 2 provides fire suppression and emergency medical service to 9,500 residents outside the city of Port Angeles from Deer Park to Lake Sutherland.
Its 30 volunteers and four full-time firefighter/paramedics respond to about 1,200 emergency calls per year.
