PORT ANGELES — Two new afternoon programs for children age 6 to 12 are about to start at the Vern Burton Community Center, 308 E. Fourth St.: Art Club with teaching artist April Watkins and Drama Club with Anna Andersen and Sarah Tucker.
Art Club, to start this Tuesday, will meet from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., and give kids a chance to explore materials traditional — clay and pastels — to unusual, such as phone books and found objects.
They also will learn about innovative contemporary artists and experiment with some new media ideas.
This club is geared toward building each student’s confidence in his or her own creativity, and learning how to apply it in everyday life.
The cost is $60 for the classes on each Tuesday through February.
The Drama Club, meeting Wednesday from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m., is a high-energy class designed to bring out the actor in each child — and shy kids are especially welcome.
Tucker and Andersen, both veterans of numerous stage productions including “The Elephant Man” at the Port Angeles Community Playhouse, will lead students in theatrical games, creative movement and vocal play, all the while encouraging them to stretch their imaginations.
Improvisational exercises and the development of characters and story lines also are part of Drama Club, which will meet each Wednesday in February.
The fee is $15 per week or $60 for the month.
