2nd UPDATE — Police say armed suspect in Port Angeles bank robbery could be in his 60s

PORT ANGELES — City police Tuesday were searching for an armed man, possibly in his 60s, who robbed the Umpqua Bank branch at 1033 E. First St.

The man brandished a handgun and demanded money from bank staff with customers present at about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Deputy Police Chief Brian Smith said.

Customers were present as several drawers were robbed of an undetermined amount of cash before the man fled, Smith said.

The robber is described as a man, possibly in his 60s, with gray hair and glasses.

He was wearing a dark-hooded jacket, light-colored pants and brown shoes.

Officers responded immediately after the report, and it “became clear very quickly that there had been a bank robbery,” Smith said in a news release.

A containment perimeter was established around the bank as Port Angeles police, Clallam County sheriff’s deputies, Elwha police, Coast Guard special agents and Olympic Peninsula Narcotics Enforcement Team detectives saturated the area.

Olympic Medical Center on Caroline Street went into a brief lockdown as police swarmed the neighborhood.

The investigation was ongoing Tuesday afternoon, Smith said.

The most recent bank robbery that occurred in Port Angeles happened in September 2009, Smith said.

Anyone with information about the robbery or the man police seek is asked to phone police at 360-452-4545.
