New Dungeness Light Station group: Calling all ‘Keepers’

Visitors invited to learn about history, future of lighthouse; also silent auction, merchandise

SEQUIM — The New Dungeness Light Station Association invites the public to the group’s annual meeting from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

The gathering will be at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 S. Blake Ave.

Visitors will learn about the history and future of Sequim’s iconic 1857 lighthouse, how to become a part of the “Keeper” program and/or how to be part of the nonprofit volunteer group that has maintained all of the facilities at the end of the Dungeness Spit for the past 25 years.

The meeting includes a silent auction and a drawing to win a week’s stay for two at the lighthouse. Also available will be lighthouse merchandise and refreshments.

The 160-plus-year-old structure perched at the end of the sand spit in salt air requires continuous maintenance and upkeep which would not be possible without volunteers, association members say.

Each year, a group of up to 15 volunteers spend a week in September doing annual maintenance and repair of the facilities.

Additionally, opportunities exist for shorter two- to three-day work parties on a monthly basis.

Volunteers with electrical, plumbing, mechanical, painting, cleaning, carpentry, vehicle, marine and other maintenance experience are always needed, association members say.
