2018 Battle of the Books gets underway in October

Battle of the Books, a year-long collaborative project between the North Olympic Library System and schools from across Clallam County, kicks off this October.

All participating students will receive free copies of the five books read throughout the year, as well as a T-shirt featuring original student artwork.

Those books include “Upside Down Magic” by Sarah Mlynowski, Lauren Myracle and Emily Jenkins (October); “The Way To Stay in Destiny” by Augusta Scattergood (November); “In the Footsteps of Crazy Horse” by Joseph Marshall III (December); “Patina” by Jason Reynolds (January) and “Wild Robot” by Peter Brown (February).

From October to February, library staffers will hold book discussions at fourth-grade classrooms, as well as facilitate a home-school student group.

Semi-final trivia competitions will be held at schools in March to determine which teams will represent their school in the final competition.

During the final competition — set for March 22 at the Port Angeles Library — teams of students from each school will participate in several rounds of book-related trivia based on the books they’ve read during the year.

Home-school students must register by Monday to participate. Register by visiting the Youth Services Department of the Sequim Library, calling 360-683-1161 x7766, or sending an email to Youth@nols.org. (Book discussions for home-school students are at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave., from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month, October through February.)

The semi-final trivia competition for home-school students will be held March 12 at the Sequim Library.

For more information about this and other programs for youth, call 360-417-8500, email Youth@nols.org or visit www.nols.org.

The Battle of the Books program is made possible through support from the Friends of Sequim Library, Port Angeles Friends of the Library and Friends of the Forks Library groups.
