PAHS orchestra

BELLINGHAM — The Port Angeles High School orchestras swept gold ratings during a statewide high school orchestra festival, sponsored by the state chapter of the American String Teachers Association and Western Washington University.

On March 16 and 17, each orchestra performed in divisions including freshmen-only ensembles Concert, large string ensembles Symphonic and Chamber orchestras.

Every participating group received bronze, silver or gold ratings — based solely upon the quality of their performance.

“In addition, among other gold-level groups, our Concert and Chamber orchestras each placed first in their respective divisions,” said James Ray, Port Angeles High School orchestra teacher.

The adjudicators for the festival included string-orchestra faculty from universities in the state and British Columbia.

Area students received written and verbal praise from these judges, highlighting the chamber’s “strong, focused sound;” a “Wonderful communication and expression” for the chamber; and “Good energy … and overall musicianship” for symphonic.

One judge described the chamber’s performance of the opening movement from Grieg’s “Holberg Suite” as “the best he’d ever heard,” according to a news release.
