PORT ANGELES — Four young members of the Lower Elwha Klallam tribe will promote drug- and alcohol-free lifestyles, especially at the tribal Canoe Journey that will climax Aug. 1-6 at the Lower Elwha reservation.
They emerged as winners of the Elwha Warrior Royalty contest, qualifications of which included making a speech in the Klallam language and translating it, demonstrating a talent, writing an essay, and answering how they would promote a healthy lifestyle in their community.
The winners are:
* King: Lazaro Tinoco, 19, of Forks, son of Dorene Charles, who sang the “Klallam Welcome Song.”‘
* Queen: Rena Francis, 25, of Port Angeles, daughter of Serena and Darryl Barkley, who sang “Amazing Grace” in the Klallam language.
* Prince: Roger Garcia, 16, of Forks, son of Dorene Charles, who shared his artwork and danced.
* Princess: Leilani Barkley, 17, of Port Angeles, daughter of Serena and Darryl Barkley, who sang a traditional family song and explained the story behind it.
Other contestants included Rosalene Boyd, 23, of Port Angeles; Randall Gonzales, 16, of Port Angeles; and Vanna Francis, 16, of Port Angeles.
