Sequim: Woman, 72, killed in four-vehicle collision on Sequim-Dungeness Way

SEQUIM — A SunLand woman was killed in a four-vehicle collision Tuesday afternoon that injured three others and closed a quarter-mile section of Sequim-Dungeness Way for several hours.

Clallam County Sheriff’s Department traffic technician Dave Ellefson said a preliminary investigation shows that a 2003 Ford Escape driven by Peggy Bauer, 72, was heading eastbound on Woodcock Road about 11:50 a.m. when it collided with a 2001 GMC truck heading southbound on Sequim-Dungeness Way.

Ellefson said the Escort apparently failed to yield to oncoming traffic as it entered the intersection.

The GMC, which was towing a John Deere tractor, was driven by Tolbert Applegate, 63, of Dungeness.

Both vehicles spun and struck two others sitting in the left-turn lane on Sequim-Dungeness Way.

One was a 1998 Ford pickup truck driven by 21-year-old Chandra Lyda of Oak Harbor. Lyda had two passengers in her truck.

The other was a 1995 Isuzu Trooper driven by 26-year-old Dustin Madson of Bliss, Idaho. Madson had two passengers in his SUV.

Bauer was pronounced dead at the scene despite resuscitation efforts by rescue crews from Clallam County Fire District No. 3.

Lyda and her passengers were transported by ambulance to Olympic Medical Center in Port Angeles, where they were treated and released for minor injuries, Ellefson said.

Neither Applegate nor the occupants of the Isuzu were injured in the collision, Ellefson said.

Applegate’s green tractor remained secured to its flatbed trailer. He had been driving below the posted speed limit, the investigator said.
