Senior citizens, students to dance Tuesday night away in Port Angeles

PORT ANGELES — Sixteen years ago, the Peninsula College student government under President Glenn Gilliam launched an event that saw students step out of their comfort zone and into the world of ballroom dance.

The students invited senior citizens from across the North Olympic Peninsula to join them at a dance in the Pirate Union Building, and the event has been happening every year since.

The dance, which alternates annually between Peninsula College and the Port Angeles Senior Center, is coming around again: at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the senior center, 328 E. Seventh St.

As always, admission is free, and the public is welcome.

‘Swept off their feet’

“I still remember the faces of my students as they were swept off their feet by this community’s most amazing dancers,” said Rick Ross, Peninsula College director of student programs.

“It was such a huge success in so many ways,” he added, “they decided without hesitation to make it an annual event.

“The popularity of today’s television dance shows has brought all the great dances back into fashion, so the concept of college students dancing with community members may be even more inviting today than it was 16 years ago,” Ross said.

Wally and the Boys, the senior center’s Tuesday night house band, will provide the music while the center lays out the refreshments.

For more information on Tuesday’s free dance and other college-hosted public events this spring quarter, visit www.pencol.edu or the Peninsula College page on Facebook.
