Recently arrived Sequim-area resident was building home when fatally shot

SEQUIM — Richard Ziegler was in high spirits earlier in the afternoon when he was fatally shot.

Deborah Foster, who lives down the street from Ziegler’s Jonrey Lane property — on which Ziegler had been living in a fifth-wheel trailer — said she had seen him earlier Saturday and that he was excited because he had received the septic system permits he needed to complete more of his home.

Ziegler, 59, was shot dead about 5 p.m., by Shawn M. Roe, Clallam County Sheriff Bill Benedict said Sunday.

Ziegler’s pickup truck was taken by Roe and driven to the Longhouse Market & Deli in Blyn, leading to a fatal confrontation with Clallam County sheriff’s deputies Saturday night, Benedict said.
